Patio umbrellas for gardens, beaches and many other scenarios
A change in wind direction or a sudden gust of wind on the water can quickly turn a beach umbrella from a shady canopy to a flying knife ready to kill. While it's hard to stifle a laugh when I see someone frantically chasing their flying umbrella down the beach, I know how scary it actually is. That's because I've been known to just stab the pole into the sand a few times and then leave it, just to watch it rip from the ground and be sent into the air.
Choose a durable patio umbrella
Choose an umbrella that is durable and has a bit of weight to it. You don't want it to be so heavy that carrying it is a burden, but in my experience, cheap, lightweight plastic umbrellas are more likely to fly even in a light breeze. Consider an umbrella anchor. After I sent a few umbrellas into the atmosphere, I purchased a cheap plastic anchor that has a spiral end. Simply turn it into sand and let the threaded rod provide some extra grip and security.
If you don't use a corkscrew anchor, don't just poke the sand repeatedly with the end of the umbrella. By rocking from side to side you will get the deepest and most secure pole. If you have a small shovel, that can help you dig deep enough. I've even seen people come down to the beach with a garden auger and a cordless drill to wring out a deep hole. The deeper the pole, the safer the umbrella will be. A good rule of thumb is about 1/3 of the height of the pole. For our safety, make a little effort.
Always tilt the beach umbrella towards the wind. This will allow the wind to push it into the ground instead of pulling it out. This is usually one of the main reasons for the AosKe beach umbrella. Please note that the wind direction can change and you may need to reposition the umbrella so that it is facing the wind.
Given my previous experience, I like the extra security. After completing the above tips, I used some sand to build an additional mound around the base. I grabbed a bucket of seawater and poured it around the base to reinforce and fill in the gaps. It wasn't very scientific, but it gave me peace of mind and I haven't lost an umbrella since.
This patio umbrella makes short beach trips more fun.
