Heating cables - a good helper to keep water pipes flowing in winter

As the days get shorter, maintenance issues come back to freeze protection. Electrical heat tracing to prevent freeze damage to pipe fittings and instrumentation is a common solution.

heating cable and lead assemblies are rugged and weatherproof. The electrical connections are enclosed within the conduit assembly, which is retained within the walls of the jacket. To provent icing (called ice dams) from forming in roofs, gutters and downspouts and provent the roof from damage and leaks and keeps water flowing through gutters and downspouts.

The heat tape is able to extend the life of the roof, stop water intrusion, and reduce the likelihood of ice fall
Install thermal cables to ice melt dams.

Measure your roof. Measure the edge of the roof along which you will install the cable, leaving a little extra space when there are skylights, valleys, gutters and downspouts. The total area you want to cover is largely up to you, but be sure to focus on areas where you see ice buildup or are particularly difficult to reach from the ground (such as roof overhangs and eaves).

Climb up the ladder so you can install the heating cable Before climbing, use a roof rake to remove excess snow from the roof. This will provide you with a cleaner work area and easier access to the ice. When you're done, grab the ladder and set it to a height where you can comfortably reach the roof. Position it so that it sits on the edge of the roof, perpendicular to the eaves you will be lining. Don't forget to call a friend for help - safety first.

Lay some roof cables along the gutters. If you have enough leftover cable after lining the edge of the roof, you can run the end through the gutter and down the downspout. If you do this, clip the cable to the drip ring left at the bottom of each triangle in Step 4. Or connect a second cable through the downspout down to the outlet.

Insert the heat cable. Make sure you are using a ground fault circuit breaker receptacle - these receptacles have built-in circuit breakers designed to prevent electric shock, so look for receptacles with "TEST" and "RESET" buttons.
